When Megan Thee Stallion teased her latest track, “Lover Girl,” earlier this month, fans couldn’t have been more excited. That said, upon its release on Friday (Oct.24), the track left critics and fans divided. Nevertheless, the track, which samples Total’s 1996 hit “Kissing You,” debuted at No.1 on the iTunes chart. The song appears to be inspired by Megan’s new beau, NBA star Klay Thompson.
Many fans praised “Lover Girl” for its production and appreciated Megan’s ability to show a softer, more romantic side. “Megan Thee Stallion went from: “Handle me, who gon handle me?” To: “I had to lock in when I found out he can handle me.”EXACTLYYYYYYYYYYYYY this!! @theestallion #lovergirl,” one X (formerly Twitter user wrote. Another user noted that critics couldn’t appreciate the track because Megan specifically “made this song for the hotties.” They noted the rapper sounded “happy and content,” unlike previous tracks like “Cobra” and “Anxiety.” They added, “This absolutely warms my heart #lovergirl.”

On the other hand, some fans found the song’s lyrics repetitive and uninspired. “I was reallllllllly hoping #LoverGirl wouldn’t do what I THOUGHT it would, which is not take off. It’s a cute song, but I needed that beat to JUMP so I could BOP, and it didn’t,” one person wrote. “I’m so disappointed.” Another X account, called the track “cute,” however certain lyrics didn’t resonate with them.
“Overall, Lover Girl is cute. I’m living for the “my man my man my baby…” part, but I didn’t care for the “pop that p*ssy part.. I felt like it could’ve been something else that gave more sexy/romantic vibes.” Earlier this year, Megan released another track, titled “Whenever,” which also received a mixed response from fans and critics alike. While many praised her sharp rapping skills, others again pointed out that her lyrical content was repetitive.
